The death of young high school athlete Austin Metcalf shook the whole internet.
While the FBI and police department are still coming to a conclusion, social media theorists and illicit accounts are spreading conspiracy theories.
Karmelo Anthony, 17, reportedly stabbed Metcalf in the chest on April 2, 2025, during an altercation at a track meet. The confrontation escalated quickly when Anthony allegedly pulled out a knife, leading to Metcalf’s fatal injury.
Following the incident, numerous fraudulent social media accounts have emerged, impersonating local officials. One of the alleged accounts claimed itself to be Frisco Police Chief David Shilson and another as the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
One widely circulated fake post falsely claimed that Metcalf died from an “MDMA drug overdose.” According to the post, a stab wound was a secondary cause of death. Officials have clarified that no such medical report has been released.

Another bogus post, which misrepresented Shilson, claimed that Metcalf had instigated the fight by “sucker punching” Anthony and had also “smashed [Anthony’s] phone onto one of the bleachers.”
It claimed that the stabbing occurred during a supposed “mutual combat,” though it was later mentioned that the claim held little ground.
