The once-powerful alliance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has gone up in flames, and now, reports are painting a chaotic picture of what led to the split. According to The Washington Post, Trump has privately told multiple allies that Musk is a “big-time drug addict,” and even questioned whether Musk’s recent behavior was linked to alleged drug use.
Tensions didn’t just explode online. Behind the scenes, Trump reportedly grew furious with Musk after the billionaire criticized his major budget bill and linked the former president to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. Musk made the Epstein comment without citing any evidence, but his words had already done the damage. According to several sources, that moment marked the point of no return for the fractured relationship.

Adding to the drama, The Washington Post reported that Musk physically clashed with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during an intense confrontation outside the Oval Office in April. The argument broke out over Musk’s claim that he could identify more than $1 trillion in government waste. Bessent allegedly called Musk “a total fraud,” prompting Musk to slam his shoulder into Bessent’s ribs. The Treasury Secretary hit back before aides intervened.
Steve Bannon confirmed the altercation, telling the Post, “President Trump heard about it and said, ‘This is too much.’”

Tensions escalated when Trump discovered that Jared Isaacman, Musk’s pick to lead NASA, had donated to Democrats. The news reportedly enraged Trump and fueled suspicion about Musk’s loyalty. According to The New York Times, Trump spent the next few days calling allies and asking if Musk’s erratic behavior stemmed from drug use.

“I don’t want to comment on his drug use. I don’t know what his status is,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, while adding that the Times reporting “sounded very unfair.”
Musk has previously acknowledged using ketamine under prescription to treat negative moods, but denied abusing it. He has not responded publicly to the latest allegations.
Though Trump told CNN he’s “not even thinking about Elon,” sources say he asked aides whether to cancel Musk’s government contracts. The fallout has also shaken GOP strategy, with Trump allies like Steve Bannon even calling for Musk’s deportation.
