A student at Alameda High is catching major backlash after creating a racist prom proposal.
According to KTVU, a teen at the high school made a racist promposal sign that said, “If I was a ni–er, I would be picking cotton, but instead, I’m picking you.”
This is the latest in a series of racist incidents at Alameda Unified schools.
The school has launched an investigation into the sign, which was revealed off campus during an NBA playoffs watch party.
Alameda, as well as the school district, have provided a plan to change “schoolwide culture.”
In the meantime, KTVU interviewed several students at Alameda High School, many of whom said they were “disappointed but not surprised.”
“It’s been happening a lot at this school, and they should change it and do more,” student Naajy Chouteau told reporters.

Another student stated that it’s commonplace to hear slurs being used in the hallways of the school.
Unfortunately, this is not the first instance where something terrible was said at Alameda High School. Back in 2021, students were disciplined for racist and antisemitic social media posts, and in 2022, the school’s bathrooms were defaced with swastikas, slurs, and the phrase “whites only.”
How Concerned Parents Responded To The Racist Prom Proposal At Alameda High School

“Keeping him anonymous, yet projecting his voice on an interview, also kid better change his shoes fr fr,” one person said.
“Alameda is keeping up with tradition,” a second person said of the high school.
“Parents!! have a talk with your children. You guys may think your kids may do no wrong but they are different in school. probably some of them are not even like this, but they become like this thinking it will gain them cool points among their peers,” a third person wrote.
“Same statements released EVERYTIME and no actions or change will come. It ain’t that hard to find the kids, but some people won’t do anything about it because of their job or embarrassment to their community or… they just agree with what’s being done,” a fourth person said of Alameda High School.
“Go after the parents they’re the source of the problem take away their TV remote so they don’t watch Fox News anymore,’ one final person added of the situation.
