A JetBlue flight coming in from Chicago gave its passengers an unexpected jerk on Thursday when it rolled off the runway and into a grassy patch at Boston Logan International Airport.
Flight 312 had just landed shortly before noon when the aircraft veered off course and came to a stop in the grass, sending emergency crews rushing to the scene.
No one on board was injured during the incident. However, it disrupted operations at one of the nation’s busiest airports. The Federal Aviation Administration quickly responded with a ground stop for all incoming flights to Logan. Operations remained halted until at least 2 p.m. as authorities scrambled to manage the situation.
Runway Closed, Passengers Bussed To Terminal

The Airbus A220 landed around 11:55 a.m. after a routine flight from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. But moments after touching down, the jet drifted off the runway, prompting emergency response vehicles to surround the aircraft. Passengers deplaned using a stair truck and boarded buses to the terminal.
“The landing was exceedingly rough,” said Melinda Wang, a Seattle resident who was on board. “But I’m very glad the pilot had her head about her and just stopped the plane in the grass. It was actually very calm. We all kind of trusted that they knew what to do, and they did,” she told WHDH.

Photos from the scene showed the aircraft sitting firmly on the grass, surrounded by emergency crews. The Massachusetts Port Authority confirmed the runway remained closed as crews assessed the aircraft and cleared the area.
JetBlue acknowledged the incident in a statement, saying, “JetBlue flight 312 from Chicago to Boston veered off the runway and onto the grass after landing. No injuries were reported. Customers safely deplaned and were bussed to the terminal.” The airline also noted that safety remains its top priority and that it will “conduct a full investigation of the incident.”
The FAA confirmed it has launched an investigation into the cause. Meanwhile, Thursday also saw tragedy unfold elsewhere in aviation. In a separate and far more devastating incident, an Air India passenger jet bound for London crashed into a medical college building in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, killing at least 240 people. Authorities called it one of the worst air disasters in India in decades.
