Julie Foudy’s voice has been part of the soundtrack for some of soccer’s biggest moments. Now, after nearly two decades with ESPN, she’s stepping away. The former U.S. Women’s National Team captain and longtime analyst is parting ways with the network just a year before the next FIFA World Cup.
Foudy, who joined ESPN in 2005, became more than just a game-day voice. She turned into a trusted presence for fans across platforms- breaking down matches, telling stories from inside the game, and championing women’s sports with clarity and energy. According to Front Office Sports, ESPN and Foudy couldn’t reach a new contract agreement, ending a notable run.
Career Beyond The Commentary Box

Foudy didn’t just talk about soccer, she lived it. Her ESPN journey began while she was still on the pitch, making her debut during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France as a studio analyst. That first appearance drew praise, and by 2007 and 2011, she led ESPN’s television coverage of the Women’s World Cup on both studio and game commentary duties.
Over the years, her role grew beyond the booth. Foudy became a key contributor to espnW, offering insight, hosting the popular podcast Laughter Permitted with Julie Foudy, and delivering personality-driven segments for SportsCenter and Outside the Lines. Her presence extended to covering the U.S. Women’s National Team and college soccer, where she served as lead game analyst.
Even as ESPN exits the picture, Foudy’s next chapter looks wide open. A member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, she brings both experience and credibility that few can match. Front Office Sports reports that Foudy has already worked with TNT Sports since 2023 and could be a strong fit for future coverage of the 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cups, which Netflix holds the exclusive U.S. rights to.
Fans and colleagues alike will surely feel the absence. But if Foudy’s past is any indicator, she won’t be out of the public eye for long. Wherever she lands next, the soccer world will be listening.
