Mattress Mack sure has made a name for himself with his monstrous bets at the world’s biggest sporting events. And he was at it again on Saturday, when he brought his millions of dollars to Churchill Downs to wager on some horses at the Kentucky Derby.
Mack was probably pretty busy with his bets throughout the day, but none was bigger than the $1.5-million he placed on 9-2 favorite Epicenter to win the 2022 edition of the “Run for the Roses.”
For those who missed it, things were looking great for Mack, as Epicenter held the lead late in the race. But then, out of nowhere, the 80-1 underdog Rich Strike came out of nowhere, blistering down the stretch to take the thrilling, unlikely victory.
Mack was noticeable distraught following the crushing defeat, and understandable so. He was so close to turning his one-and-a-half mill into well over $8-million dollars.
After taking a moment to gather himself, Mack did offer some words to his fans, reminding them all that these sorts of things are simply a part of sports gambling. “You win some, you lose some, and sometimes you get rained out. NEXT!”
As Mack pointed out, Rich Strike wasn’t even a part of the Derby until Friday, when he drew in for another scratched horse. His victory marked the biggest underdog to win the Derby since 1913. It’s just too bad Mack didn’t sprinkle a little something on him.
