First Lady Melania Trump is again at the center of controversy following her recent speech at the 19th International Women of Courage Awards. Just days after presenting honors to eight women advocating for human rights, mental health, and social justice, backlash quickly followed her public remarks on the “power of love.”
During the ceremony, Melania spoke about personal resilience and how love has shaped her response to adversity. “Throughout my life, I have harnessed the power of love as a source of strength during challenging times,” she said. “Love has inspired me to embrace forgiveness, nurture empathy and exhibit bravery in the face of unforeseen obstacles.” While her message aimed to strike a chord of unity and compassion, some critics weren’t receptive.
Melania Faces Political Attacks And Renewed Scrutiny

Rep. Maxine Waters reignited the firestorm while speaking at a recent protest. The California congresswoman questioned Melania’s immigration background in response to President Trump’s hardline stance on birthright citizenship.
“If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania,” Waters mentioned. “We don’t know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look.”
Melania Trump, born in Novo Mesto in the former Yugoslavia (now Slovenia), became a U.S. citizen in 2006. While there’s no public evidence suggesting any irregularities in her naturalization process, her critics have repeatedly used her immigrant background as a political weapon.
This isn’t the first time Melania has faced such attacks. In a now-viral post, former New York Times journalist Kurt Eichenwald criticized her White House redesigns, calling them an affront to American heritage. “This is the first time I have been furious that @FLOTUS is a foreigner,” he wrote, according to The Independent. “She has no right to wreck our history.”

Despite the harsh rhetoric, Melania has remained silent, often choosing not to respond to public criticism. Whether this latest wave of backlash will prompt a different approach from the First Lady remains to be seen.
