United States President Donald Trump issued a statement on the Kentucky Derby ahead of the annual race.
The 151st iteration of the prestigious racing event was hosted at Churchill Downs in Louisville this Saturday, with the venue having been the home of the Derby since its inaugural race in 1875.
Trump has attended several major sporting events this year, including Super Bowl 59 and the Daytona 500, but he did not make it to Churchill Downs this weekend.
Still, he released a statement prior to the event, praising what he described as “an iconic American institution.”
“The Kentucky Derby is not only a stakes race, but also an iconic American institution and an elegant celebration of our culture, customs, and unwavering competitive spirit,” his statement read.
