However, the plane was redirected to San Francisco on the way back to the US. It finally touched the ground at 5 PM local time.

While the passengers were in disbelief about the pilot missing as crucial as a passport, United Airlines made sure to compensate.

In response to the disruption, United Airlines offered meal vouchers to affected passengers and apologized for the unexpected inconvenience. One passenger reported receiving two meal vouchers totaling $30, which she used at the airport.
To ensure the journey to Shanghai continued, United arranged for a new crew to replace the original pilot. The rescheduled flight took off around 9 PM the same evening, arriving in Shanghai approximately six hours later than planned.
