Just days before the world’s best golfers were set to tee off at The Masters, Augusta National Golf Club was forced to clear the grounds Monday morning due to approaching thunderstorms. Patrons had only a short window to soak in the famed course before officials shut things down at 11:25 a.m. ET, citing safety concerns.
“Due to inclement weather conditions, Augusta National Golf Club was forced to suspend Monday’s practice round and evacuate the grounds,” the club said in a statement. The skies quickly darkened, and with a 90 percent chance of storms forecast through the afternoon, there was little choice but to pause preparations.
Thunderstorms Disrupt Masters Preparations

Monday’s disruption didn’t surprise tournament organizers. In fact, Augusta National had already announced a delayed opening for patrons earlier in the morning. While gates eventually opened at 8 a.m., the window didn’t last long before the weather forced a full evacuation.
For players, the stormy skies meant a significant setback. Many players planned to use Monday to study the course, especially after Hurricane Helene’s tree damage altered parts of Augusta. While some, like Rory McIlroy, got in recent reconnaissance rounds, others were banking on this crucial practice time to tune up their game.
Due to inclement weather, Augusta National was evacuated late Monday morning and did not reopen. Per ANGC: Purchasers of Monday practice round tickets will be sent refunds in May and will be guaranteed the opportunity to purchase 2026 Monday practice round tickets.

Officials expect practice rounds to resume on Tuesday, with clear skies predicted for most of the week. Organizers scheduled the popular par-three contest for Wednesday, just before Thursday’s opening round. There may still be a few scattered showers on Friday, but otherwise, the worst appears to be over.
