A true Hollywood-like story has resurfaced about a golf fan who once purchased a Masters green jacket for $5 at a thrift store…only to turn it into a life-changing payday.
Every year, the winner of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club is presented with a green jacket. Before each annual tournament, the winners don their green jackets and meet annually for the champions’ dinner at the golf club. As part of the special tradition, the previous year’s Masters tournament winner presents the special jacket to the new victor.
Since the winners are the rightful owners of the jackets for the rest of their lives, most sports fans and memorabilia collectors can only dream of getting their hands on an official Masters jacket.
But a fascinating story has resurfaced about a lucky fan who came across an authentic Masters champion’s green jacket at a Toronto thrift store back in 1994. The fan purchased the rare piece for only $5, with Augusta officials later authenticating it as the real deal.
There’s a compelling mystery to this, though. The owner’s name was cut out of the jacket, and experts later determined it was from the 1950s. Augusta, however, wouldn’t say who the green jacket may have belonged to:

In 2017, British journalist Dominic Pedler purchased the jacket at an auction for the price of $139,348.80. And all the fan had to give up in 1994 for that life-changing payout was $5, or roughly $10.80 in today’s dollars.
