Sometimes, golf can drive even the calmest players to the edge. For professional golfer Ryan McCormick, frustration reached a point where the usual tricks- deep breathing, mindset resets, maybe a quiet rant, just weren’t cutting it. So, he took a different route: taping his mouth shut during play.
The 32-year-old has had a rough start to the year, slipping from the PGA Tour down to the Korn Ferry Tour. In a candid moment during the Club Car Championship in Savannah, Georgia, McCormick opened up about his recent struggles and the unusual way he’s trying to deal with them.
A Quiet Fix For A Loud Problem

“Been having not-so-fun times this year on the golf course,” McCormick said in a video posted by the Korn Ferry Tour’s official social media. “Pretty angry and mad. So I figured I’ve tried a lot of things, and I just figured I’d shut myself up. So I put tape over my mouth.”
The move might seem extreme, but it wasn’t just for show. According to McCormick, the tape was an attempt to regulate not only his temper, but also his breathing. “I felt like Bane, like Batman, muzzle myself,” he joked.
Golf is hard.

It’s a stark departure from the typical image of a composed pro golfer, but McCormick isn’t trying to make a statement. He’s just trying to stay in the game, mentally and emotionally. “I mean, I’m not like proud. I don’t want to create an experience for my playing partners that’s not fair,” he said. “Having a tough time, and that was my solution today.”

Whether McCormick keeps using the tape trick remains unclear. His unusual method has raised eyebrows and probably a few smirks but in golf, where mental composure often determines success, quiet solutions can sometimes prove most effective.
As unorthodox as it may be, McCormick’s approach highlights just how tough the grind can be for players chasing their shot at the top. And sometimes, keeping your cool means keeping your mouth shut- literally.
