Jon Rahm is the 2023 Masters winner after an eventful few days in Augusta.
The Spaniard got off to a very bad start on Thursday as he four-putted for a double-bogey. However, he recovered strongly enough to beat out the likes of Brooks Koepka, Phil Mikelson, and Russell Henley to come out on top, becoming the first player to win said tournament after starting with a double-bogey since Sam Snead in 1952.
Rahm ended the first round tied with Koepka and Viktor Hovland at seven-under. And he capitalized after Koepka’s form took an untimely dip on Sunday for a three-under in the final round that led to his first Masters title.
We can’t be sure what Snead’s reason for the gaffe was as it happened so long ago. But Rahm has let us in on his, blaming Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz.
“He sent me a text, and I’m gonna paraphrase, that said ‘That first green is looking like a walk in the park right now’ 10 minutes before I four-putted to start the tournament,” he joked during his victory speech. “So thank you Zach. Don’t ever do that again, please.”
Ertz took to Twitter to respond, letting Rahm know he will continue to text him before games.
