The Mets walked it off. The Pirates walked off frustrated. And Henry Davis walked right into a viral moment.
In a tense 4-3 Mets win over the Pirates on Monday night, it was a strange decision from Pittsburgh catcher Henry Davis that had everyone talking. During the seventh inning, with the score tied and Luisangel Acuna charging home from second, Davis set up on the wrong side of the plate. Instead of blocking the baseline, he stood off to the first-base side and gave Acuna a free lane to score.
Ron Darling was critical of how Henry Davis was setup behind the plate to apply this tag.

Former MLB star and now broadcaster Ron Darling didn’t hold back.
“That’s a bad choice,” Ron said bluntly on-air.
Henry Davis’ Blunder Overshadowed A Strong Outing

It was a brutal moment in what had been a promising night for Pittsburgh’s young ace Paul Skenes, who threw six innings of one-run ball and looked every bit the future star. The Pirates did tie the game 3-3 in the top of the ninth, but Davis’s seventh-inning miscue loomed large by the end.
Davis, the 2021 draft’s No. 1 overall pick, has had his ups and downs behind the plate. Monday’s mental error just added to the scrutiny. While his bat has shown flashes, it’s his defense, especially in high-pressure spots, that continues to raise concerns.
The Pirates dropped to 14-28, while the Mets improved to 27-15.
