The Boston Red Sox have been dealt a heavy blow as their star third baseman Alex Bregman is expected to miss significant time after suffering a right quad strain, and manager Alex Cora isn’t sugarcoating the news.
After the team’s 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, Cora confirmed that Bregman’s injury is “significant,” comparing it to the 2021 setback that kept the slugger off the field for nearly two months.
“He’s going to be out for a while,” Cora said. “We have trust in our medical staff, but he’s going to be out for a while,” the Red Sox manager added.

Red Sox Call Up Top Prospect Marcelo Mayer

Bregman sustained the injury on Friday night while rounding first base after a single. He immediately signaled to the dugout and was removed from the game. An MRI later revealed the strain was more severe than initially hoped.
At the time of his injury, Bregman was hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs, leading all AL third basemen in multiple categories.

In response, the Red Sox have called up top infield prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple-A Worcester. The 22-year-old, ranked one of MLB’s top 10 prospects, had been heating up in the minors. He has managed a .271 average, nine home runs, and a .818 OPS across 43 games.
While traditionally a shortstop, Mayer has been getting reps at second and third, giving the Sox some much-needed flexibility.
With Bregman out and Mayer now in the spotlight, Boston faces a major test in the coming weeks, both at the plate and in the standings.
