Anthony Volpe had a rough night in the Yankees’ 5-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The Bronx shortstop made two costly errors in the sixth inning, allowing the go-ahead run to score and helping the Blue Jays tie the game.
In the bottom of the sixth with New York holding a 3-2 lead, a routine grounder bounced toward Volpe at shortstop. The rookie lunged and made a bold decision to try to get Ernie Clement out at first base. His throw arrived late, and instead of an out, the Jays got a free runner at second.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. then made the Yankees pay for Anthony Volpe’s error with a clutch two-run single that turned out to be the difference-maker in New York’s loss.
Notably, this was not the only error he made in the game. Earlier in the same inning, Volpe made a wild throw to out Davis Schneider at third. The ball bounced past Chisholm and rolled behind home plate, letting Myles Straw take an extra base.

Anthony Volpe Says He Doesn’t Regret Making The Error

While Volpe’s error led to a disappointing defeat, the 24-year-old said that he doesn’t regret making that split-second decision, believing Clement’s ball was a play that needed to be made.
“We’re going to be aggressive, try to make plays and back up the pitcher,” Volpe said. “So that’s baseball. It happens. We had a lot of opportunities after that, too. I feel like we still took good at-bats and put good swings on the ball.”
“I’m going to go for that play every single time,” Volpe said about the Straw play. “The ball gets knocked down. It’s not an error, but I expect to make that play, whether it’s in the book or not.”

Anthony Volpe’s error came amid reports that the Yankees are considering trading him, possibly in a deal involving Bo Bichette from the Blue Jays. Whether or not the trade happens is still uncertain, but Yankees fans will be hoping Volpe plays like he remembers he is still wearing pinstripes when they face Toronto again on Tuesday.
