The MLB trade deadline is approaching, and several teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, are hunting for a reliable pitcher. The Toronto Blue Jays have also jumped into the conversation. GM Ross Atkins confirmed the team is exploring options to bolster its pitching depth.
While the Jays aren’t planning to go on a trading spree, Atkins admitted they are in the market for smart upgrades, especially on the mound.
“We’re in a strong position,” Atkins said on Monday ahead of Game 1 against the New York Yankees. “But we think we can be better, and we will focus on that ahead of the deadline.”
GM Ross Atkins says Blue Jays will look to add to the team ahead of the trade deadline. Says pitching will be on the Jays’ wish list though they could also add a right-handed bat. Jays have the prospects and financial flexibility to consider various upgrades, Atkins said.

The Blue Jays’ strength has been its defense and bullpen, but pitching depth still feels like the most significant need. Max Scherzer has made only three starts due to a thumb injury, and with Bowden Francis on the injury list, the Jays could use another reliable starter to ease the pressure.
Blue Jays Set Their Eyes On A Right-Handed Hitter

Atkins also mentioned that the Jays have financial backing from ownership to add more talent to the roster. That said, they will also look to add a right-handed hitter before the trade deadline closes on July 31.

“Adding a right-handed hitter to our team is something we’ve been trying to do internally and considered external alternatives, as well. But on the run-prevention side, it’s probably going to come from pitching, as good as our defence has been,” the Blue Jays GM said.
Monday night’s 5-4 win over the Yankees showed glimpses of what this Blue Jays team can still be. As Atkins rightly said, some key signings before the deadline could most certainly make them better.
