A Boston radio host teed off on Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora for missing Monday’s series opener against the New York Mets.
Alex Cora missed Monday’s game at Fenway Park to watch his daughter, Camila, graduate from Boston College. Bench coach Ramón Vázquez filled in as skipper for the day, with the Red Sox squeaking out a close 3-1 victory.
Most can understand why Cora would miss one of 162 regular-season games to witness his daughter’s life-changing moment. If it were Game 7 of the ALCS or World Series, it’d be a much bigger debate.
But one prominent Boston sports radio host was unhappy with Cora’s decision, even though the Red Sox won the game anyway. Per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald, Mike Felger of 98.5 The Sports Hub ripped on Cora and called it a “preposterous” decision to miss Monday’s game
“They were, I believe, done by noon, which means you can have a nice big party in the middle of the day. Just cab down the street and manage the game.”
“It’s just the tone you set, the example you set for the team. It’s just the leadership and optics of the whole thing. It’s a very easy chance for him to say, ‘Nothing’s more important than tonight’s game.”
Per Starr, Alex Cora said baseball was “secondary,” and that he “made the best decision for” his daughter. Cora noted that the critics probably have their own families and have been in similar circumstances.
The middling Red Sox took two of three from the Mets at Fenway Park after losing a weekend home series to the Atlanta Braves, thanks to strong performances by Rafael Devers and the pitching staff.

Alex Cora’s Red Sox Haven’t Met Expectations This Year

The Red Sox were a popular pick to win the AL East this year, having signed Alex Bregman and Walker Buehler while making a blockbuster trade for Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet.
But Boston has flirted with a .500 record all season long, with Wednesday’s loss dropping them to 25-26 on the season. They’re 5.5 games behind the New York Yankees for the AL East and 2.5 out of the final wild card spot in the AL.
