Boston Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks announced on Instagram that he has been the victim of horrific and cruel death threats following Wednesday’s loss to the New York Mets.
Hendriks relieved Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet in the top of the sixth inning, with the game tied 1-1. After retiring the side in the sixth, Hendricks returned for the seventh inning but allowed three hits and as many earned runs as the Mets avoided a sweep with a 5-1 victory.
After the game, Liam Hendriks revealed on his Instagram story that he received sickening death threats from fans. This included disgusting jokes about his successful fight against Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma:

Sadly, it’s all too common for professional athletes to receive “threats” from cowardly and gutless fans who can only act tough behind a screen. But to stoop to another level like this and mock Hendriks for surviving cancer is another level of low, and one can only hope those “fans” will end up doing something useful with their lives.
Those Red Sox fans who want to blame Liam Hendriks can also question Alex Cora’s bullpen management, considering that Crochet was dealing with one earned run through 5.1 innings when he was pulled. Or, you know, how about blaming an underachieving offense that mustered just one run against a slumping Mets team?
Perhaps some of those trolls were unhappy with Hendriks openly complaining about his limited playing time, but that doesn’t give them the right to say what they said.

Liam Hendriks Needs Time To Find His Game

Hendriks missed the entire 2024 season recovering from Tommy John Surgery, which he had undergone a year earlier. So it’s unfair for fans to be this hard on the three-time All-Star, who would always be a little rusty upon returning to the mound.
Give Hendriks a few more games to find his rhythm, and then we’ll see where he is.
