The Colorado Rockies stumbled to a dismal 7-33 record, and they put it all on Bud Black as his firing came straight away.
The management fired Black after the tough start to the 2025 MLB season.
It’s hard to deny that Black’s departure was somewhat expected given the team’s struggles. But that doesn’t make it any easier for fans or those who respect him. After all, Black has long been an admirable figure in the baseball world.
His departure triggered a heartfelt response from fellow manager Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Roberts, who learned from Black during their time together with the San Diego Padres, sees him as a mentor and expressed disappointment at the news.
“I’m bummed. I’m disappointed. I don’t think Casey Stengel could change the outcome of that ballclub and that’s not the manager’s fault. But obviously, they felt they needed a change in voice or direction. But for me, there’s not many people that are better than Buddy Black. So, yeah, that’s very disappointing. It is certainly not his doing,” Roberts said.

What a quote
Roberts compared Black’s situation to that of the legendary Casey Stengel. He suggested that even a manager of Stengel’s caliber would have a tough time turning this Rockies team around.

This really hits home and points to the reality that the problems facing the Rockies run deeper than just one person at the helm. Roberts pointed out that the struggles are not solely Black people’s fault.

Rockies Sacked Bud Black Despite GM’s Confidence In Him

While the Rockies had a rocky record recently, the management pulled off a shocker and fired Bud Black.
However, many believe this move feels less like a genuine solution and more like a temporary Band-Aid on a much larger wound.
It’s hard to forget that the Rockies haven’t had a winning season since 2018. And this latest shake-up came amid the ongoing struggles within the team and its management.
Just last week, general manager Bill Schmidt expressed confidence in Black and the players, saying they were showing effort and energy. But after an embarrassing 21-0 loss, those words seem to ring a little hollow.
Bud Black was handed the keys to a sinking ship. The issue with the ship isn’t its captain, it’s the person who built the ship in the first place.

The fact that GM Bill Schmidt wasn’t included in the managerial changes shows me the Rockies aren’t ready for true change yet.
It feels more like Schmidt was trying to safeguard his own position and using Black as a scapegoat for the team’s failures.
Now, Warren Schaeffer has been promoted to take over as manager. He’s been with the organization for a while. First as a player in their minor league system and then as a coach.
While it’s always encouraging to see someone familiar step up, the real problems with the Rockies run deeper than coaching alone. Their offensive struggles—ranking near the bottom in batting average, runs scored, and on-base percentage- all of these point to larger issues in how the team has been built.
