
Houston Astros No. 1 prospect Cam Smith got a call for the Opening Day roster. After the announcement, the 22-year-old rookie was overwhelmed and couldn’t hold back his tears. Smith broke down in an interview and talked about his harrowing journey to the big leagues.
The right fielder was the 14th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs in the 2024 MLB draft. The Astros acquired Smith, along with Isaac Paredes and Hayden Wesneski, in exchange for Kyle Tucker. To his surprise, the Astros have invited him to the Opening Day roster. It was a dream come true for Smith to make it to the big leagues.
“I always thought it was possible. You know, I think I had a great group of guys around me to help me out and get here today. So, I always saw as the possibility you know for it to happen. And we’re here today talking about it now so very blessed,” Cam Smith said.
Smith later mentioned that it was his mother that helped him through this incredible journey.
“One point it was just me and her in the house. She struggled to take me to baseball games and practice and I’m just happy to do this for her,” Smith continued.
