Major League Baseball players usually chew edible items like sunflower seeds or gum, but St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras decided to try his hand on…batting tape?
During Saturday’s home game against the Minnesota Twins, cameras caught Willson Contreras chewing on batting tape during his at-bat. Just look at him going to town on it like a dog with a bone:

Mr. Contreras, there are kids watching these games. Maybe don’t give them weird ideas like chewing batting tape in the middle of an at-bat.
On a baseball-related note, the Cardinals defeated the Twins 5-1 to improve to 2-0 on the young 2025 season. Contreras himself had a terrible day at the plate, going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
But Erick Fedde had a superb outing on the mound, going six innings with two strikeouts, two hits and one earned run in the victory. Lars Nootbaar had two hits, one walk and a pair of RBI, with All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado contributing two hits and an RBI.
Willson Contreras was also hitless in the season opener against Minnesota, going 0-4 on the day with two strikeouts. But as a career .258 hitter, he’s obviously going to figure it in short time.

Willson Contreras Is In Third Season With Cardinals

The 32-year-old Contreras played his first seven seasons with the NL Central rival Chicago Cubs (2016 to 2022), leading them to a World Series championship in his rookie year. The three-time All-Star signed a five-year deal with St. Louis in 2022, adding another powerful bat to their lineup.
