Cedric Mullins could be on the move, and two playoff hopefuls are circling.
According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers have been linked to Mullins in early trade chatter, as the Baltimore Orioles consider reshuffling their roster before the deadline.
Mullins, a former All-Star and Silver Slugger, has long been a fan favorite in Baltimore, but with the Orioles deep in outfield depth and looking toward the future, his name is officially back in the rumor mill.
“He can steal your base. Can play above-average defense. He can be bet anywhere you need in the lineup, and for the number of teams out there that need a center fielder”, Morosi said on MLB Central

Why MLB Teams Want Cedric Mullins?

Morosi further said that Mullins will be a better option for teams like the Phillies and Rangers than the White Sox’s Luis Robert Jr, who has struggled this season.

“If you were to take a comparison, as much as there’s been rumblings about Luis Robert Jr for a long time. Mullins has an easier contract to move, he’s playing better right now than Robert is, and he’s a free agent,” Morison added.
He continued, “For all those reasons, you think about the Phillies being a tremendous fit for him. I would even see a team like the Rangers possibly being a good fit.”
The 30-year-old has consistently contributed since breaking into the league in 2018. His 2021 season still stands out: a .291 average, 30 homers, and 30 stolen bases.
This season, Mullins has cooled off from his peak years but still brings value. He’s hitting around .230 this season, and remains a defensive asset in center field. In a market thin on proven outfielders, that’s more than enough to draw interest.
The Phillies are reportedly looking to add a reliable leadoff bat and more speed to their lineup, while the Rangers want to boost their outfield depth and add a veteran presence as they try to stay in the AL playoff picture.
