The Chicago Cubs might not have been the most active team in the offseason, but they did sign one of the biggest players in the league. Kyle Tucker is paying off, and he’s certainly helped the team sit on top of the NL Central Division.
It turns out that Craig Counsel and his squad are not done adding more stars to the team. This time, rumors are swirling around the Cubs to pursue a star pitcher from the Kansas City Royals. The MLB trade deadline is not far off, and with the All-Star break and the MLB Home Run Derby, teams are already eyeing their possible trade options.
Chicago Cubs Eye Seth Lugo From The Royals

The Cubs have been linked to several players, but one candidate that makes sense is Seth Lugo from the Royals. MLB insiders Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel have named Lugo as one of the possible trade candidates. Passan and McDaniel are not the only people who see Lugo as a fit for the Cubs.
“The Chicago Cubs and the Kansas City Royals had discussions this week about a trade that could send right-handed starter Seth Lugo to the North Siders, sources familiar with the negotiations said,” wrote Matthew Trueblood per Northside Baseball.
It’s also worth noting that Seth Lugo has a player option with the Royals for 2026 at $15 million. The Chicago Cubs can pursue Lugo, but if things are not going to be easy, especially since he comes with a player option. Moreover, as Trueblood puts it, Lugo is not going to be cheap.

It all comes down to the big question. The Royals must be willing to part ways with one of their best pitchers. Given their struggling season, it’s possible for the team to let go of Lugo and bring in hitters to the plate.
The Royals are now 40-43 in the AL Central, and the competition is not going to get easier. The Tigers, Guardians, and Twins are fighting for the top spot, and making the playoffs is pretty slim already. If the Chicago Cubs offer them a great value for Lugo, they might ship him out of Kansas City. The Royals have improved their week 13 MLB power rankings.
