It’s hard to say that the Arizona Diamondbacks were the runners-up for the 2023 World Series. The D’backs are having a bad run this season, and their starting rotation is badly hit. With Corbin Burnes sidelined for the rest of the season, they are currently in a tough spot.
Burnes had season-ending Tommy John surgery, and the NL West competition is making it worse for the team. At present, they hold a 32-34 record, which is two games behind the .500 mark. Arizona is fourth in their division and is 7.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The team’s only way to get back in the race is to make a couple of trades. Despite their injured rotation, MLB insider Bob Nightengale thinks the Diamondbacks could part ways with their veteran pitcher.
“It could be Zac Gallen. It really could. You’re going to get more for Alcantara than you would for Gallen, who’s a free agent. I’d put Gallen over Alcantara unless they magically turn it around in Arizona,” Bob Nightengale said via Foul Territory.

Gallen is in his final season of arbitration under a one-year, $13.5 million deal. As Nightengale says, the D’backs might have several reasons to trade Gallen.

Gallen has struggled to make ends meet this season. The veteran pitcher has a terrible 4-8 record with a poor 5.15 ERA. The pitcher has struggled to maintain control in most of his games, and he’s undeniably having one of the worst seasons.
Gallen has 75 strikeouts in 80-plus innings, but his failure to win games puts him in a vulnerable spot. The D’backs need more pitching arms; they need pitchers that could help them win games, and Gallen’s failure to deliver might put him on the trade block.
Bob Nightengale’s words might come true. Apart from Gallen and Burnes, Brandon Pfaadt has been doing a decent job, while Merrill Kelly is trying to pick up the pace. The Diamondbacks need another strong pitcher to replace Burnes this season. Despite their struggling, the D’backs have improved their week 11 MLB power rankings.
