World Series champion manager Ozzie Guillen just lit a fire under Major League Baseball (MLB). The former White Sox manager stirred controversy this week by accusing MLB of favoritism toward Shohei Ohtani amid the gambling scandal involving his ex-interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.
“Everyone knows Shohei Ohtani gambled and was protected by MLB,” Gullen was quoted as saying, according to Fernando Ballesteros.

The Ohtani saga erupted in March when Mizuhara was accused of stealing nearly $17 million from the two-way superstar’s account to cover his own gambling debts. Initially, Mizuhara claimed Ohtani knew and agreed to help, only to walk it back, admitting he had lied. MLB and federal investigators quickly launched an investigation. However, Ohtani was declared a victim of fraud and cleared of any wrongdoing.
While Ohtani walked away unscathed, Marcano and four others were hit with punishments. Guillen believes MLB’s selective approach sends the wrong message.
Shohei Ohtani Continues His MVP-Caliber Season

While the off-field drama simmers, Ohtani is delivering an MVP-caliber season at the plate. The Dodgers’ superstar leads the National League with 23 home runs and 65 runs scored. He slashed .295/.389/.648 with a 1.037 OPS. However, the two-way star is also leading the franchise with the most strikeouts this season, which has left fans worried.

Ohtani’s May was historic: he tied the Dodgers’ record with 15 home runs in a single month and was named NL Player of the Month. His performance has kept the injury-riddled Dodgers atop the NL West at 38-25, despite a decimated pitching staff that’s seen 15 arms land on the injured list.
