Seattle Mariners fans held their breath on Saturday night when star outfielder Julio Rodriguez exited early against the Los Angeles Angels. The 24-year-old left the game in the third inning after being hit on the right ankle by a hard ground ball while sliding into third base during a steal attempt.
Yikes, Julio Rodríguez is down after being hit on his right ankle/shin while attempting to steal third base just as Randy Arozarena scorched a 98.1 mph liner.

The play unfolded quickly. Randy Arozarena sent a rocket down the third base line, and as Rodriguez slid in safely, the ball struck him flush on the ankle. He remained down momentarily before walking off under his own power. The Mariners later announced he is day-to-day with a right ankle contusion.
Before the injury, Rodriguez looked locked in. He went 2-for-2 with a stolen base and a run scored, continuing what had been a productive weekend despite the team’s struggles. The Angels eventually pulled out an 8-6 win, handing Seattle their fifth straight loss.
Julio Rodriguez’s Injury Is A Big Blow for Mariners

Through 62 games this season, Rodriguez is slashing .254/.321 with 10 home runs, 33 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. He has also continued to flash elite defense in center field. Just the night before, he made a jaw-dropping leaping catch at the wall to rob a home run.
Off the field, Rodriguez has had to deal with more than just baseball. Earlier this week, he spoke out about a targeted burglary at his Seattle home, calling it “one of the hardest moments” he and his family have faced.

Manager Dan Wilson said the team would evaluate Rodriguez again Sunday morning, with a decision on his availability pending how the ankle responds overnight. With the Mariners now sitting at 32-31 and sliding in the AL standings, they can ill afford to lose their star for long.
