The MLB, like every other competitive sport, is growing at an amazing rate. And when more and more players come in, more and more teams pour in money, violation of rules are almost guaranteed.
While the league is strict on the use of Performance Enhancement Drugs, or PED, there were players who met with ill-fate just for testing positive for drug use.
As the Philadelphia Phillies put an 80-game suspension for Jose Alvarado, it brings back all those names who were suspended.
J.C. Mejía

In 2023, the Milwaukee Brewers suspended J.C. Mejía for 162 games due to his second positive test for a performance-enhancing drug. The drug in question was the anabolic steroid Stanozolol.
Mejía became the first player to receive such a suspension under the Major League Drug Agreement since Fernando Tatis Jr.’s suspension in August 2022.
Mejia had previously served an 80-game suspension for the same substance starting on May 17, 2022.

Noelvi Marte

Back in last year, around the same time in March 2024, the Cincinnati Reds suspended their top prospect Noelvi Marte for 80 games without pay.
The suspension came in the wake of a violation of MLB’s drug policy. Marte tested positive for Boldenone, a banned anabolic steroid, and his suspension kicked in with the start of the 2024 regular season.
Orelvis Martinez

Apart from all the other suspensions on the list, Orelvis Martinez of the Toronto Blue Jays got suspended at the most unfortunate time.
The Blue Jays suspended him for 80 games just two days after making his big league debut. The 22-year-old infielder had tested positive for clomiphene, a substance on the league’s banned list.
Martinez explained that he had been prescribed Rejun 50, a fertility drug, while trying to start a family with his girlfriend, after visiting a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic.
He took full responsibility for the oversight of not disclosing this information to his team or the MLB Players Association.
Jurickson Profar

Only last month, Atlanta Braves’ veteran outfielder Jurickson Profar joined the list of players getting an 80-game suspension.
The ruling came after testing positive for the banned substance chorionic gonadotropin, a performance-enhancing drug. The suspension began earlier in April, coinciding with the start of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Profar will be eligible to return to the team on June 29, but he will be ineligible for the 2025 postseason due to this suspension.
Jose Alvarado

The Philadelphia Phillies have recently suspended their superstar closer, Jose Alvarado.
Jose received an 80-game suspension from MLB after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, specifically exogenous testosterone.
This news hit fans hard, especially since the suspension is effective immediately. It means Alvarado won’t just miss regular-season games but also any chance of pitching if the Phillies make it to the postseason.
