Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox are all set to enter the 2025 MLB season. Devers has been a productive third baseman for the team, but Alex Bregman’s signing has brought discomfort. Devers was keen on remaining in his position, but the team seemed to have other plans.
The slugger was not ready to give up his position, and the Red Sox were ready to move Bregman to second base. Recently, Devers mentioned that he’s ready to do what’s good for the team. However, there seems to be some bitter air after Bregman arrived.
Bregman will play third, and Rafael Devers is expected to be a designated hitter. Former Red Sox star A. J. Pierzynski opened up on the Devers-Bregman drama during an episode on Foul Territory. Pierzynski believes the issue was handled poorly.
“It just was handled poorly. Can you imagine being the Red’s third baseman and then all of a sudden without telling you and without being told and no one mentioning to you. Of course a guy of Devers stature is gonna get a little bit upset. He was blindsided by it a little and now he’s had time to think about it. He’s changed his mind and said the right things,” Pierzynski said.
He further mentioned that Bregman will be the Opening Day third baseman, and Devers will be the DH.

Rumors have been swirling around that Devers reportedly wanted to be traded. According to Mass Live.com, Devers hurt his pride and was serious about not giving up his position. Reports suggest that he was angry enough to consider asking for a trade.
It’s hard for the Red Sox to part ways with a player who wants to remain in Boston. The slugger signed a long-term contract and will not leave easily. Bregman and Devers have no option but to comply with the team’s rules.
A similar situation occurred with the Yankees last year when Gleyber Torres refused to give up second base for Jazz Chisholm. Rafael Devers and the Red Sox have bigger things to deal with. They need to make the playoffs, and that has been their primary focus. On the other hand, the Dodgers have announced that Mookie Betts might miss the series against the Cubs.
