The Los Angeles Dodgers have been in the spotlight after signing several top players in the offseason. The franchise acquired top sluggers and pitchers and retained players from last season. However, many of their contracts have been deferred.
MLB fans and other players in the league have raised questions about the team’s payroll. Several fans and insiders have called out the franchise for their approach. The team was also accused of spoiling baseball by acquiring top players with deferred contracts. However, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred mentioned they are not breaking any rules.
MLB insider Jeff Passan recently touched upon the reality of the team’s $392 million payroll.
“What the Dodgers are doing is within the constraints of the collective bargaining agreement. That’s why nobody can really complain beyond just the fact that the team is owned by the Guggenheim Company, which has billions and billions of dollars, more money than owners of some other teams. They are taking advantage of that. It’s not just the deferred money, it’s they money they are putting into signing bonuses,” Passan said.
The insider also thinks there is no certainty that a salary cap will solve such issues. Passan says it’s the feeling of not being able to compete that’s harming fan bases.
“It’s really the feeling of not being able to compete that is harming these teams and harming fan bases more than anything,” Passan continued.
