Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy didn’t hold back when asked about the intensity of the Dodgers’ ongoing battles with the San Diego Padres. Despite the growing noise around the matchup, the veteran third baseman was firm in his stance.
“The Padres bring everything that is in a rivalry, but you only have one rival,” Muncy said on Foul Territory. “That’s always going to be the Giants for the Dodgers. And it’s always going to be the Red Sox for the Yankees. People say the Astros and Yankees have a good rivalry, and that might be true, but you don’t have multiple rivals. For me, it’s just one team.”

Muncy’s comment came ahead of Game 1 of the Dodgers-Padres series – a matchup that has built plenty of heat in recent years but, in Muncy’s eyes, still doesn’t measure up to the century-old Giants-Dodgers feud.

The Dodgers backed up Muncy’s words with an 8-7 extra-innings win over the Padres on Monday night. Muncy was solid at the plate, delivering an RBI double in the fifth inning that helped erase an early deficit.
Muncy’s performance against the Padres continued what has been a strong bounce-back stretch. After a slow start to the season, the veteran slugger has found his rhythm at the plate. Since May, Muncy has tallied 11 RBIs with an impressive 122 wRC+ and a 19.6% strikeout rate.
