Frankie Montas was supposed to be building momentum in his return to the big leagues. Instead, he has sparked outrage among Mets fans after a disastrous rehab start in Triple-A.
Pitching for Syracuse on Thursday night, Montas was completely overmatched. The right-hander gave up 7 hits and 8 earned runs in just 1.2 innings, allowing a home run and throwing only 53 pitches before getting pulled.

“Hope to be proven wrong, but this is one of those signings that almost the entire fanbase said right away, why? The “lab” has their work cut out for them on this one,” another fan replied.

Mets in No Hurry to Rush Montas’ Return

Despite the rough outing, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is not rushing Montas back to the majors. Speaking after their 4–3 win over the Nationals on Thursday, he was clear about the club’s approach.
“I think the decision for Montas is what’s best for Montas. If he needs another [rehab start], we’ll give him another one,” Mendoza said.
“The goal here is for him to be ready to go 100 percent, and whenever he’s at that level, we’ll make the decision. But for now, too soon. We gotta wait until he pitches tomorrow, and then we’ll go from there.”
New York will host the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday for Game 2.
