Juan Soto had an off night, going 0-for-5 in the Mets’ 6-5 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. That was all Yankees fans needed to jump in with criticism, questioning Soto’s slow start and whether he’s living up to the record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal he signed in December.
Soto, who had been heating up recently, saw his average dip to .259 with 8 home runs and 19 RBIs after the hitless outing. Yankees fans on social media wasted no time, calling him “overpaid” and “mid,” pointing to his quiet performance in a game the Mets let slip away late.
But Mets fans weren’t having it, and fired back hard.
Mets Fans Fire Back After Soto Criticism

Mets fans flipped the script, reminding Yankees fans that their own team lost to an even worse team in the Athletics, and did it looking worse.
One fan posted, “They lost to a good team. You lost to a team that plays in a minor league ballpark and doesn’t have a city. own guys.”

The Soto criticism comes during an up-and-down start to his Mets career. While the counting stats are decent, fans expected a faster start from a guy with MVP expectations. Still, there’s plenty of optimism inside the Mets clubhouse. Hitting coach Eric Chavez said Soto’s swing is fine and that he’s just missing results on well-hit balls.
And it’s not like Soto hasn’t shown flashes. Just days ago, he blasted a 434-foot homer into the Chicago night. As the season goes on, those at-bats are expected to turn into bigger numbers.
For now, both New York teams are navigating early bumps, but when it comes to Soto, Mets fans aren’t ready to panic.
