David Peterson wasn’t in the mood for hype.
After striking out Shohei Ohtani three times and tossing 7.2 innings of gem-like baseball, the Mets lefty had a bold message for the media – “He’s just another hitter.”
On Saturday night at Citi Field, the New York Mets pitcher delivered a standout performance, leading his team to a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Peterson pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out seven batters. Notably, he struck out Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani three times, holding him hitless in four at-bats.
After the game, Peterson downplayed the significance of facing Ohtani, stating, “He’s just another hitter. One of nine in their lineup. That’s how I look at everybody. Obviously, he’s a great player, and he’s done what he’s done in this game, and they have a lot of great hitters.”

The Dodgers took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, aided by a controversial play where a ball appeared to hit batter Dalton Rushing’s shin but was ruled fair, allowing a run to score.
However, the Mets responded in the fourth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Starling Marte hit an infield single to tie the game. Juan Soto then delivered a two-run double, giving the Mets a 4-2 lead.
Brett Baty contributed with a 3-for-3 performance, including an RBI double in the eighth inning. Closer Edwin Díaz secured the win with a four-out save, striking out three batters.
This win was crucial for the Mets, especially after an embarrassing 13-inning loss the previous night. Manager Carlos Mendoza praised Peterson’s effort, calling it a “big boy performance” that provided much-needed relief for the bullpen.
The Mets and Dodgers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
