The MLB offseason seems to be finally picking up the pace that it should. First, the New York Mets, then the Houston Astros, and finally Pittsburgh Pirates followed in. The Pirates have agreed to a one-year, $4.025 million contract with veteran Tommy Pham. And if anything, the fans are loving it all.
The short signing came as a significant move for the Pirates in their pursuit of a corner outfielder. They are particularly looking to strengthen their outfield after a lackluster performance last season. Pittsburgh’s struggle was real particularly in the right field where they finished near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories.
At 37, Pham brings over a decade of Major League experience. He has played for seven different teams in the last three years alone. Pham’s offensive performance in 2024 included a .248 batting average, nine home runs, and 39 RBIs. All of this adds up to his recent challenges. However, his underlying metrics suggest he can still contribute, with a solid xwOBA and impressive plate discipline.

Defensively, Pham has had his struggles as well. But it’s not all hardship for him, he offers versatility as he can play all three outfield positions. With an immediate need for stability in the corner outfield, he fits the bill for the Pirates. The team was in dire need of aid after Bryan De La Cruz and Conor Joe left.
Internet Fans React To Tommy Pham Signing One-Year Deal With The Pirates
As the Pirates add veteran outfielder Tommy Pham to their roster, the fanbase is cheering up. Pittsburgh will be Pham’s 10th team in a lengthy MLB career that began in 2014. Previously, he played for several teams, including the Royals, where he had a brief stint in 2023 and contributed during their postseason run. Once the news was out, social media fans started reacting.

Now with Pham’s arrival, the Pirates continue to pack their lineup. They already signed Andrew McCutchen and reacquired Adam Frazier this offseason. Pham is expected to take on a platoon role, sharing outfield duties with All-Star Bryan Reynolds, Andrew McCutchen, and Oneil Cruz.
