Darin Ruf’s MLB career might be over, but the battle off the field has just begun. The former Milwaukee Brewers slugger is suing the Cincinnati Reds, claiming unsafe field conditions at Great American Ball Park, which ended his playing days in 2023.
Ruf says he suffered a fractured kneecap and severe laceration to his knee after slamming into an exposed metal tarp roller while chasing a foul ball during a June 2 game. The injury was so bad that Ruf never stepped back on a major league field again.
The lawsuit, filed in Hamilton County, Ohio, accuses the Reds of negligence and seeks damages for what Ruf calls a “career-ending hazard that never should’ve been there.”
