The Philadelphia Phillies are not having the perfect start to the 2025 MLB season. After a dominant performance last year, the team is barely struggling to retain the top spot in the NL East Division. The Mets have proved to be a huge threat, and the competition is going to get tough.
The team is five games behind the Mets in second place. Many were concerned about the Phillies’ failure to make the World Series last season, but an MLB insider sees a bigger worry for them.
MLB sportscaster Chris Rose has seen uncertainty with the team’s future. According to Rose, the bullpen has been a disaster, with only a few pitchers holding on.
“The thing is with Philadelphia, they’ve basically had two guys in their bullpen, three if you include Tanner Banks, who’s actually been pretty good. And Alvarado and Strahm have been good. But everybody else they put out there, it’s like you better double seatbelt the ride because you don’t know what it’s going to look like.” Rose said.
What’s more concerning is the fact that the Phillies have an ageing lineup. Rose continued to discuss top sluggers and their ages. Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber, and J.T. Realmuto are all past their 30s.
“With the ages of guys – Harper’s 32, Turner’s 31, Castellanos’ 33, Kepler’s 32, Schwarber is 32, Realmuto is 34. The only young guys that are in their everyday lineup that can be counted on right now are Bryson Stott, who’s 27. Bohm who’s been MIA…he’s 28 years old but who knows what his future is in Philadelphia,” Rose continued.

Phillies Face Bullpen Struggles As Mets Triumph With Dominance

The offense has been decent for Philadelphia but the bullpen has been disappointing. The bullpen has the second-highest ERA is baseball which is certainly a huge concern for the team. The numbers are not good and they are not ready for the postseason.
It’s becoming a bit unbalanced and with team’s like the Mets dominating, it’s hard to secure a division title. Sluggers like Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh have been struggling at the plate. As Rose says, the future for the Phillies is questionable.
Several top sluggers will soon hit the tail-end of their careers. The only way to improve their rotation is to give room for younger stars, but it’s hard to let go of veterans. The good news is they have plenty of time to pick up the pace this season. The Phillies are ranked at No. 8 in the week 4 MLB power rankings.
