With the Toronto Blue Jays falling further and further out of the postseason race, the odds of All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette getting traded appear to be growing.
The Blue Jays were able to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for $500 million last month, but there’s no indication that they’ll pay Bichette top dollar as well. With the 27-year-old in his contract year, expect Bichette to draw plenty of interest leading up to the July 31 trade deadline.
A humiliating sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays dropped the Blue Jays to 25-27 on the year. It’s clear that they’re not playoff contenders, but the front office could score a nice return in a Bo Bichette trade.
Garrett Kerman of ClutchPoints proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has Toronto sending Bo Bichette to the New York Yankees for three of the Pinstripes’ top prospects: Shortstop George Lombard Jr., outfielder Spencer Jones and right-handed pitcher Ben Hess:
“For the Yankees, Bichette fills a critical need at either shortstop or third base, depending on how they configure their infield. He immediately upgrades their lineup and provides a potent right-handed bat for the postseason push. If New York is serious about keeping pace with the league’s elite, acquiring Bichette is the type of bold move that could define their season…
The proposed deal also aligns with Toronto’s recent strategy. After securing Guerrero Jr. as the face of the franchise, the Blue Jays can now retool around him while adding premium young talent. Lombard Jr. and Jones could both be MLB-ready within two seasons, giving Toronto a dynamic new core to build around.”
The defending American League champs (32-20) are six games up on the second-place Tampa Bay Rays (26-26) for tops in the AL East. GM Brian Cashman will surely be a buyer at the deadline, and he could be extra motivated to make a big splash for a player like Bichette to push this team over the top for the first time since 2009.

Bichette usually flirts with a .300 batting average, but the two-time AL hits leader hasn’t found any consistency this season. He’s batting .275 with four homers, 25 RBI and a .716 OPS, but his numbers would surely improve on a deep New York lineup, not to mention that they play in one of baseball’s most hitter-friendly stadiums.
