
San Diego Padres star infielder Luis Arráez had to be carted off the field in Sunday night’s road game against the Houston Astros following a scary collision at first base with Mauricio Dubón.
In the top of the first inning, with Fernando Tatís Jr. already on first, Luis Arráez attempted to reach first base with a sacrifice bunt off of Framber Valdez. As Arráez tried to beat the throw, he accidentally collided with Dubón and fell immediately to the ground.
Arráez had to be carted off but made sure to give a “thumbs up” sign to the crowd as he left the field:

The Padres later announced on X/Twitter that Luis Arráez was taken to the local Houston Methodist Hospital. In a positive update, the Padres said he’s “stable, conscious, responsive, and able to move his extremities.”

With Arráez leaving the game, veteran Gavin Sheets took over as the designated hitter. The Padres squeaked out a 3-2 victory to avoid a sweep and improve their MLB-best record to 16-6.

San Diego acquired the three-time All-Star in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins last year. Arráez was a significant difference-maker for the Padres, batting .318 with four homers, 41 RBI and nine stolen bases in 117 games.
Luis Arráez Is Off To Another Strong Start In 2025

Coming into Sunday’s contest against the Astros, Arráez boasted a .287 batting average and .755 OPS with three homers and seven RBI. Incredibly, Arráez only struck out twice over his first 87 at-bats of 2025.
