The Philadelphia Phillies are facing a major bullpen crisis after closer Jose Alvarado received an 80-game suspension. Alvarado was caught for violating the league’s PED policy. Philadelphia will need to make a move since their reliever will not be eligible to play in the postseason.
Despite other pitchers in their bullpen, Alvarado has left a vacant spot. While they might be able to play without him for some time, it’s necessary for them to find another reliever. With their postseason dreams looming, the Phils are linked to a former Yankees pitcher.
David Robertson has quickly emerged as a top target, and being a free agent has made it easy for the team. Robertson is 40 years old and is widely regarded as the best free agent reliever available on the market. The Phillies reportedly reached out to him even before Alvarado’s suspension was announced.

Robertson previously played with the team for two years, including a key role in their 2022 World Series run. David Robertson proved he still has plenty left in the tank, posting a 3.00 ERA over 68 games for the Texas Rangers in 2024. The Phils might be able to secure a short-term one-year deal with ease to acquire Robinson.

Philadelphia is now 29-18 on the season and is 0.5 games ahead of the Mets. They have a great chance to retain their lead as they continue their series with the Colorado Rockies and the Oakland Athletics. Whereas, the Mets will face off against the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Alvarado’s suspension is certainly a massive blow for the bullpen. Trading for a player like Robertson will be perfect for the Phillies to address their bullpen issues.
