The Philadelphia Phillies are in scramble mode after closer Jose Alvarado was hit with an 80-game suspension for PED use. Losing your most trusted late-inning arm mid-season is brutal, especially when you are battling for control of the NL East.
Alvarado was lights-out this year, throwing 20 innings with a 2.70 ERA and racking up 25 strikeouts. Now, with their top dog gone, Philly is being forced to look outside the box for reinforcements. Internal names like Jordan Romano and Orion Kerkering are holding the fort, but still, the bullpen is walking on thin ice.
Romano has not allowed a run in his last eight appearances, and Kerkering has limited opponents to one run across seven outings in May. Despite these performances, the bullpen’s overall ERA remains a concern, prompting the front office to explore external solutions.
Davis Martin Could Be Phillies’ Secret Weapon

One potential target is Chicago White Sox reliever Davis Martin. He has demonstrated versatility and effectiveness, attributes that could bolster the Phillies’ bullpen during Alvarado’s suspension.
While Martin’s name hasn’t made national waves, insiders say he is firmly on the Phillies’ radar. With the bullpen stretched thin and the trade deadline inching closer, this could be one of those low-key moves that pay off big.

In addition to Martin, the Phillies have reportedly reached out to veteran reliever David Robertson. Robertson, who previously pitched for the Phillies in 2019 and 2022, remains a free agent.
Last season, he posted a 3.00 ERA with 99 strikeouts over 72 innings for the Rangers. While discussions are in the early stages, Robertson’s experience could provide immediate stability to the bullpen.
The front office has some decisions to make, and the upcoming months will be crucial for the Phillies.
