The Boston Red Sox stunned everyone by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster mid-season deal. Devers had over eight years of team control remaining, but he was exchanged for two MLB pitchers and two prospects.
Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello, and James Tibbs III were shipped to Boston. Devers’ deal sparked criticism, and many were unhappy with the way things went. Everyone was aware that Devers was not ready to shift positions. Hence, many believe the Red Sox had to part ways with him.
Former MLB slugger David Ortiz blasted Devers for his ego and for ruining his career in Boston.
“There are baseball players who think they’re bigger than the game, and the game is over 100 years old. What f***ing company pays you $300 million to do whatever you want? They’d tell me “jump” and I’d jump; “roll” and I’d roll, that’s why I’m a Hall of Famer, and in Boston, they love me because I was an employee. This is a business, it’s not your house, it’s not about what you want or don’t want, this is a business that people have to put their clothes on to fight for and respect. Devers could have been the face of the Red Sox franchise,” Ortiz said.

Devers had several chances to do what was necessary for the team. However, he refused to play first base and was eventually traded.

There have been mixed reactions to Devers’ trade. Many were unhappy, but many feel that the team made the right decision to part ways with the slugger. Recently, an anonymous insider praised the team for parting ways with the slugger.
“It took some real courage for Boston to do this, but I actually think it is the right long-term decision for the franchise. Devers had become an imperfect fit on their roster, and the relationship clearly seems to have soured. Freeing up $250 million AND getting some nice young talent in return is a great deal for them in a vacuum,” an NL insider said as per the Athletic.
It was indeed a bold move for the Red Sox, but essential, especially since Devers was not flexible. Boston has plenty of options with Devers’ money, as they could make potential trades in the future. Giants SS Willy Adames is excited to play alongside Devers.
