The 2025 MLB trade deadline is not far away, and teams are preparing to target top prospects. One such player is Ryan McMahon. The Colorado Rockies’ third baseman has garnered interest from top division leaders.
Many MLB analysts believe that McMahon needs a change. He’s played with the Rocking for nine years, and a trade would help both ends. The Rockies are the worst team in the league with an 8-37 record. Fans have given up hope, and trading one of their top sluggers might help to add more players.
The latest rumors involve the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. Both teams are seeking to bolster their infield depth, and Ryan McMahon is the perfect candidate. The Cubs need a third baseman more than anything since they demoted their rookie, Matt Shaw.
According to Bob Nightengale, one of MLB’s most trusted insiders, the Dodgers and Cubs are behind McMahon.
“Several teams, including the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, are closely monitoring Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon in case he’s traded this summer,” Nightengale wrote via USA Today.

The Dodgers already have their hands full with enough players in their rotation. Hence, the Cubs have a better chance of pursuing the All-Star.

Colorado Rockies Might Not Part Ways With Ryan McMahon

The Rockies need to start from scratch. They fired Bud Black, and they have several holes to fill. Despite the rumors, they might not be ready to part ways with one of their best hitters. Despite a slow start to the 2025 MLB season, McMahon is valued for his left-handed power and defensive prowess.
The slugger is batting .209 with six home runs and 11 RBIs. Moreover, he’s under contract through 2027 and is owed $12 million this year and $16 million each of the next two seasons. That said, the Rockies will owe him nearly $40 million.
Given the current situation, a multi-player deal will be the perfect option for the Rockies to trade the slugger. While the Rockies have not publicly committed to trading Ryan McMahon, the Dodgers and Cubs are the first to show interest. Colorado ranks at the bottom of the week 7 MLB power rankings.
