The Los Angeles Dodgers are starting to look like themselves again. They are on a 5-game winning streak. Shohei Ohtani continues to do what he has been doing since joining LA. Max Muncy’s new glasses have turned his season around, and Andy Pages can’t stop driving in runs. After a bumpy start to 2025, the offensive engine is running hot.
But despite the firepower, the team has struggled at times on the mound. Injuries have weakened LA’s pitching staff, with Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki, and Blake Snell all missing significant time. Several pitchers are yet to get back in their starting rotation. But now, with the trade deadline looming, LA might be ready to throw more cash to fix it.
According to MLB Insider Bob Nightengale, the Dodgers are targeting Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara to bolster their injury-plagued rotation.
“They want another starter, and yes, Alcantara is the man they want,” Nightengale wrote in his piece for USA Today.
Alcantara hasn’t looked like the same pitcher that he was when he won the 2022 NL Cy Young Award, but he is getting closer. Coming off Tommy John surgery, the right-hander has posted a 2-1 record with a 2.74 ERA over four June starts.
While Alcantara is not at his peak now, he will likely not be a cheap trade for the reigning World Champions. The 29-year-old is under team control through 2027 on a team-friendly deal, meaning Miami can afford to demand a big return. Still, if there’s one franchise that is not afraid to splash money, that’s the Dodgers.

The Dodgers’ front office spent the offseason collecting pitchers like Pokémon cards in an effort to avoid having to shop at the deadline. But things haven’t gone to plan. Speaking earlier this month, the president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, admitted the team could look to add more if needed.
“I’m still optimistic,” Friedman said via the LA Times. “It requires guys coming back on or close to the timelines that we have penciled out. We have shown that, if we’re not in a position to do that, we’ll be aggressive to add. But our strong desire is not to.”
The Dodgers’ offense has managed to hide the cracks in their rotation and bullpen, allowing the pitching staff to do “just enough” to keep winning. But as the season progresses, “just enough” won’t be enough. At one point, 14 Dodgers pitchers were on the injured list. Bringing in Sandy Alcantara will certainly help the team.
