It’s been a rough stretch for Anthony Volpe, and Saturday night just made it worse as his throw accidentally hit Aaron Judge on the face during the team’s 12-6 loss to the New York Mets.
The Yankees’ shortstop has already been under the spotlight for his struggles, both at the plate and in the field. His costly errors and then refusing to take accountability rubbed fans the wrong way last week.
On Saturday, Volpe once again got on fans’ nerves. As the Yankees were jogging off the field at the end of the 4th inning, Volpe casually tossed the ball back toward Aaron Judge, who was heading in from right field. But Judge wasn’t looking. The ball struck him in the face, knocking off his sunglasses and drawing blood near his eye.
Aaron Judge was clearly shaken up but stayed in the game. He returned the next inning with a small bandage under his eye.

But for Yankees fans, already on edge with Volpe’s performance this season, the scene was just another gut punch.

Aaron Judge And The Yankees Continue Their Miserable Slump

However, it isn’t just Anthony Volpe who has been struggling. The Yankees as a team are going through a rough stretch, dropping their sixth straight game on Saturday. Despite his hot-hitting streak, even Aaron Judge had a few hiccups. They have lost 16 of their last 22 games, sliding from a strong 42-25 record to 48-41 overall.
The Mets exploded early. In the first inning, Brandon Nimmo crushed a grand slam, and Pete Alonso added two more homers, finishing with five RBIs in the game. Meanwhile, starter Frankie Montas earned the win with 5 2/3 solid innings.
On the other hand, Carlos Rodon had a rough outing, allowing seven runs over five innings. Aaron Judge seems to be the only player doing his best right now.
For the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Austin Wells, and Anthony Volpe made a late push with their homers. Volpe, who has been tied for the MLB lead in runners left on base, hit his 10th homer of the season. But those solo shots weren’t enough to go over the line.
