Yankees manager Aaron Boone had no patience for second-guessing Friday night after a reporter questioned Anthony Volpe’s aggressive base running. Following the Yankees’ tense 2-1 extra-innings loss to the Red Sox at Fenway, Boone backed his young shortstop and ensured everyone heard it.
With the game tied in the 10th, Volpe tried to steal third with no outs. He was called out after his hand briefly bounced off the base during the slide, a moment that killed a key scoring chance. When asked if he approved of the decision, Boone fired back.
“Oh hell yeah. You’re not?” “You’ve seen Anthony steal third, and the only reason he’s out is because he kind of gets caught on the slide when he doesn’t extend,” the Yankees coach said.

Aaron Boone Ejected in 10th-Inning Chaos

The Volpe play wasn’t the only heated moment. Later in the 10th, DJ LeMahieu lined a ball near third that was ruled foul. Boone immediately stormed the field, argued with umpires, and got ejected. On his way out, he tossed his gum and made his feelings clear, accusing the umpiring crew of not having “the balls” to overturn the call.
The game itself was a grind. Aaron Judge crushed his 26th homer of the season in the 9th to tie it. But the Yankees couldn’t cash in on extra-inning chances. They fall to 42-26, still among the best records in the AL East, but their lead continues to tighten.
