Miami Marlins starter Ryan Weathers had a bizarre and frightening start to his day on Saturday. During pregame warmups against the Tampa Bay Rays, Weathers was accidentally struck in the head by a throw from his own catcher, Nick Fortes, as they wrapped up final tosses.
The lefty dropped to the mound after the ball hit him square on the top of the head. Trainers rushed in immediately, and it looked like his night might end before it even began. But in a surprising turn, Weathers stayed in the game and took the mound as scheduled.

Weathers opened up about the accident after the game and admitted that it was definitely the first time he had experienced a bizarre incident like that.
“It was definitely a first. Obviously, it was unfortunate but also fortunate that it him on the top of the head and not the back of the head,” Weather told reporters.

Before Saturday’s outing, Weathers had been one of Miami’s most reliable arms. He had a 2.49 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 21 2/3 innings.
The Marlins will monitor him closely over the next few days, but the early signs are positive. The team will continue their series against Tampa Bay, with Game 2 scheduled on Sunday.
