Walker Buehler’s first taste of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry couldn’t have gone worse, and he knows it. The veteran right-hander was shelled for seven runs in just two innings on Friday night in the Bronx, failing to give Boston a fighting chance in one of the season’s marquee matchups. After the game, Buehler didn’t deflect blame. Instead, he delivered a brutally honest assessment of his performance and season.
“This organization put a lot of faith in me this offseason, and I’ve been fu**ing embarrassing for us,” Buehler told reporters after the game.
“It’s obviously a big game and a big rivalry that I was excited to be a part of. And for it to go the way that it did is super disappointing.”

Buehler was rocked early as New York scored five in the first and two more in the second. The righty gave up seven hits, two walks, and hit Anthony Volpe on the elbow, knocking the Yankees shortstop out of the game.
A Season of Frustration For Walker Buehler

The Red Sox brought Buehler in this offseason on a one-year, $21.05 million deal, hoping he could anchor the rotation. So far, that investment hasn’t paid off. Through 10 starts, Buehler owns a 4-4 record with a 5.18 ERA and 1.44 WHIP, far from the dominant form he showed earlier in his career with the Dodgers.

Friday’s outing wasn’t an outlier, either. Buehler has now given up four or more runs in three of his last five starts. He’s struggling to locate his fastball and failing to put away hitters with two strikes. What makes it worse is that Boston, reeling with 10 losses in their last 13 games, needs a stabilizer, not another liability.
