Tommy Pham and the Pittsburgh Pirates were playing a doubleheader when a heated atmosphere engulfed in Comerica Park. Both teams had tensions rising and Detroit Tigers fans started calling out Pham saying, “Tommy Sucks.”
Pham faced relentless heckling from sections of the Detroit crowd. As the game progressed into the late innings, chants of “Tommy Sucks” echoed throughout the stadium. The situation escalated in the 10th inning when MLB officials were forced to eject a group of fans who had been particularly vocal in their taunts.
Tigers fans were unhappy with Pirates players for some reason, and Tommy Pham was not the only victim. The tension was not limited to the stands. Earlier, Pirates reliever Dennis Santana was involved in a heated moment with a fan near the visitors’ bullpen. A video captured Santana attempting to confront and even swing at a heckler.

Pirates manager Don Kelly said he didn’t witness anything, but he knew that fans were saying something to Pham, which he didn’t appreciate. Despite the off-field distractions, the Pirates managed to secure a hard-fought victory over the Tigers in extra innings.

The 2025 MLB season has not been kind to the veteran slugger. Pham has a poor batting average of .194 with a .278 OBP and a .497 OPS. He has zero home runs in 155 at-bats. The slugger has three stolen bases and only 30 hits.
Pham’s bad start puts him in a tough spot with the Pirates. The slugger was signed on a one-year deal, and his chances of an extension seem to be slipping away. It’s also worth noting that Tommy Pham played for three teams last season.
It’s hard to find a team calling in on a slugger like Pham for another year. This could be his last opportunity to help extend his career. As for Santana, he was unhappy with the heckling that escalated into an ugly moment.
