Austin Wells has been a decent performer for the New York Yankees. The catcher has stepped up with his performance behind the plate. He’s been a decent slugger with a .299 batting average in 2024. Wells has also shown significant improvement at the plate during spring training. He smashed six home runs and has now earned the lead-off spot.
The Yankees had to make changes to their squad after adding other hitters to the team. Yet, many fans were not anticipating Austin Wells to take the lead-off position. While some think it’s a good move, others blame Aaron Boone for this decision. Here’s a look at some reactions on X.
“What an awful move,” one fan wrote.

“Does Wells ability to walk really make up for Jazz or Volpe’s speed, potential ability to steal/avoid double plays or move extra bases when Judge puts the ball in play? I truly don’t understand how the analytics would favor this approach,” another fan chipped in.

Not a fan of this. Why not Volpe? I believe he has a better OBP

Gonna be tough for home games. Having to catch the first half inning then rush to take off your catchers gear and step into the batters box is not ideal.

That’s a lot of pressure for the catcher

Yankees To Create History With Wells As Their Lead-Off Hitter

The Bronx Bombers will create history by placing Wells as their lead-off hitter. The Yankees have never had a catcher in their franchise’s history going in first. Boone has made the final decision, and Wells has a challenge ahead.
While this is a possible experiment by the Yankees manager, he will most likely keep Austin Wells as the lead-off if it pays out well. Boone wants another World Series run and hopes such changes will benefit the team.
On the other hand, Yankees fans have shown their support for Boone’s recent comment on Juan Soto.
